The Low Country Jazz Festival serves as the primary fundraising event for the 501.C.3 Closing the Gap in Health Care, Inc. organization founded by Dr. Thaddeus John Bell. Its mission is to decrease health disparities and increase health literacy among underserved African American communities in the Carolinas. The organization accomplishes this by providing health education and programs that promote wellness and healthy lifestyles. All proceeds from the festival are returned to the community through the efforts of this Organization. The Organization also established a $250k endowment this year which will send 2 minorities to school within the medical field. Dr. Thaddeus John Bell is the CEO of Closing the Gap in Health Care, Inc. and has been diligently serving his community to eliminate these health disparities for over 30 years. 100% of the proceeds from the festival go to Closing the Gap in Health Care, Inc.
The festival also provides an education component themed Music in Our Schools, which the festival produces an in-school concert and education session for elementary school students in the Charleston area. Along with the festival and Music in Our Schools segment, the festival has an educational health fair called “Jazzing with Sugar” which offers health and nutritional education for those with diabetes.
